National Do Not Call List for cellphones
Pass it On !!!!!
Starting Jan 1, 2005, all cell phone numbers will be made
public to
Tele-marketing firms. So this means as of Jan 1, your cell
phone may start ringing off the hook with telemarketers, but
unlike your home phone, most of you pay for your incoming calls. These telemarketers will eat up your free minutes and
end up costing you money in the long run. According to the
National Do Not Call List, you have until Dec. 15th 2004 to
get on the national "Do not call list" for cell phones. They
said that you need to call 1-888-382-1222 from the cell
phone that you wish to have put on the "do not call list" to
be put on the list. They also said you can do it online at http://www.donotcall.gov or www.donotcall.gov Registering only takes a minute, is in effect for 5 years
and will
possibly save you money (definitely frustration)! Make sure
you
register now! |

A cardiologist says If everyone who gets this mail sends it to 10 people, you can bet that we'll save at least one life. Read this...
It could save your life!!
Let's say it's 6.15 pm and you're driving home (alone of course), after an unusually hard day on the job. You're really tired, upset and frustrated.
Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to radiate out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home.
Unfortunately you don't know if you'll be able to make it that far. You have been trained in CPR, but the guy that taught the course did not tell you how to perform it on yourself.
HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.
However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest.
A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital.
Tell as many other people as possible about this. It could save their lives!!

IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT AREA CODE
We actually received a call last week from the 809 area code.
The woman said "Hey, this is Karen. Sorry I missed you--get back to us quickly.
Have something important to tell you." Then she repeated a phone number beginning with 809. We didn't respond.
Then this week, we received the following e-mail:
Subject: DON'T EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809, 284 AND 876
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION PROVIDED TO US BY AT&T.
DON'T EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809
This one is being distributed all over the US. This is pretty scary, especially given the way they try to get you to call.
Be sure you read this and pass it on to all your friends and family so they don't get scammed!
MAJOR SCAM: Don't respond to Emails, phone calls, or web pages which tell you to call an "809" area Phone Number.
This is a very important issue of Scam Busters be! cause it alerts you to a scam that is spreading *extremely* quickly, can easily cost you $2400 or more, and is difficult to avoid unless you are aware of it.
We'd like to thank Verizon for bringing this scam to our attention.
This scam has also been identified by the National Fraud Information Center and is costing victims a lots of money.
There are lots of different permutations of this scam.
HERE'S HOW IT WORKS:
You will receive a message on your answering machine or your pager, which asks you to call a number beginning with area code 809. The reason you're asked to call varies. It can be to receive information about a family member who has been ill, to tell you someone has-been arrested, died, to let you k! now you have won a wonderful prize, etc In each case, you are told to call the 809 number right away. Since there are so many new area codes these days, people unknowingly return these calls.
If you call from the US, you will apparently be charged $2425 per-minute.
Or, you'll get a long recorded message. The point is, they will try to keep you on the phone as long as possible to increase the charges. Unfortunately, when you get your phone bill, you'll often be charged more than $24,100.00.
WHY IT WORKS:
The 809 area code is located in the British Virgin Islands (The Bahamas).
The 809 area code can be used as a "pay-per-call" number, similar to 900 numbers in the US. Since 809 is not in the US, it is not covered by U.S. regulations of 900 numbers, which require that you be notified and warned of charges and rates involved when you call a pay-per-call" number.
There is also no requirement that the company provide a time period during which you may terminate the call without being charged. Further, whereas many U.S. homes that have 900 number blocking to avoid these kinds of charges, do not work in preventing calls to the 809 area code.
We recommend that no matter how you get the message, if you are asked to call a number with an 809 area code that you don't recognize, just disregard the message.
Be wary of e-mail, or calls, asking you to call an 809 area code number. It's important to prevent becoming a victim of this scam, since trying to fight the charges afterwards can become a real nightmare. That's because you did actually make the call. If you complain, both your local phone company and your long distance carrier will not want to get involved and will most likely tell you that they are simply providing the billing for the foreign company. You'll end up dealing with a foreign company that argues they have done nothing wrong.
Please forward this entire message to your friends, family and colleagues to help them become aware of this scam

INFO ABOUT CLOTHES DRYERS
I had a wonderful morning, the heating unit went out of my dryer! Why
does everything seem to fall apart this time of year!???
The guy that fixes things went in to the dryer and pulled out the lint
filter. It was clean. We always clean the lint from the filter after
every load of clothes. He told us that he wanted to show us
something.
He took the filter over to the sink and ran hot water over
it. Now, this thing is like mesh - I'm sure you know what your dryer's
lint filter looks like - WELL......the hot water just laid on top of the
mesh!!! It didn't go through it at all!!!
He told us that dryer sheets cause a film over that mesh and that's
what burns out the heating unit. You can't SEE the film, but it's
there. He said the best way to keep your dryer working for a very long
time (and to keep your electric bill lower) is to take that filter out
and wash it with hot soapy water and an old toothbrush (or other brush)
at least every six months.
He said that makes the life of the dryer at least twice as long! How about
that???!!!! ' Learn something new everyday!
I certainly didn't know dryer sheets would do that. So, thought I'd
share!
Note:........................................................................
I went to dryer and tested my screen by running water on it. The water
collected a little but ran though the screen. I dried it off and was ready
to put it back in the dryer since the water ran through it but, I thought
was the heck it won't hurt to wash it while I had it out. Warm soap water
and a nylon brush and I had it done in 30 seconds.
I then ran the water over the screen and what a difference the water just
gushed through it with no pudding at all and this time I was running the
water at a faster rate. That repairman knew what he was talking about.

Is It A Stroke?
This might be a lifesaver if we can remember the three questions! Is It a Stroke?
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster for the stroke victim. A stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say any bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
* Ask the individual to smile.
* Ask him or her to raise both arms.
* Ask the person to speak a simple sentence.
a.. If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the general public to learn the three questions.
They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting last February. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage.

LEAVE THE PLANTS OUTSIDE.. PLEASE
Garden Grass Snakes (also known as Garter Snakes... Thamnophis
sirtalis) can be dangerous ... Yes, grass snakes, not rattlesnakes.
Here's why...
A couple in Sweetwater, Texas, had a lot of potted plants. During a recent cold spell, the wife was bringing a lot of them indoors to protect
them from a possible freeze.
It turned out that a little green garden grass snake was hidden in
one of the plants and when it had warmed up, it slithered out and the wife
saw it go under the sofa. She let out a very loud scream.
The husband (who was taking a shower) ran out into the living room
naked to see what the problem was. She told him there was a snake under the
sofa. He got down on the floor on his hands and knees to look for it. About
that time the family dog came and cold-nosed him on the butt. He thought the
snake had bitten him, so he screamed and fell over on the floor. His wife
thought he had a heart attack, so she covered him up, told him to lie still
and called an ambulance.
The attendants rushed in, wouldn't listen to his protests and
loaded him on the stretcher and started carrying him out. About that time
the snake came out from under the sofa and the Emergency Medical Technician
saw it and dropped his end of the stretcher. That's when the man broke his
leg and why he is still in the hospital.
The wife still had the problem of the snake in the house, so she
called on a neighbor man. He volunteered to capture the snake. He armed
himself with a rolled-up newspaper and began poking under the couch. Soon he
decided it was gone and told the woman, who sat down on the sofa in relief.
But in relaxing, her hand dangled in between the cushions, where
she felt the snake wriggling around. She screamed and fainted, the snake
rushed back under the sofa, and the neighbor man, seeing her lying there
passed out, he tried to use CPR to revive her.
The neighbor's wife, who had just returned from shopping at the
grocery store, saw her husband's mouth on the woman's mouth and slammed her
husband in the back of the head with a bag of canned goods, knocking him out
and cutting his scalp to a point where it needed stitches.
The noise woke the woman from her dead faint and she saw her
neighbor lying on the floor with his wife bending over him, so she assumed
he had been bitten by the snake. She went to the kitchen and got a small
bottle of whiskey, and began pouring it down the man's throat. By now the
police had arrived. They saw the unconscious man, smelled the whiskey, and
assumed that a drunken fight had occurred.
They were about to arrest them all, when the women tried to
explain how it all happened over a little green snake. The police called an
ambulance, which took away the neighbor and his sobbing wife.
Just then the little snake crawled out from under the sofa. One of
the policemen drew his gun and fired at it. He missed the snake and hit the
leg of the end table that was on one side of the sofa. The table fell over
and the lamp on it shattered and as the bulb broke it started a fire in the
drapes. The other policeman tried to beat out the flames, and fell through
the window into the yard on top of the family dog who, startled, jumped out
and raced into the street, where an oncoming car swerved to avoid it and
smashed into the parked police car.
Meanwhile, the burning drapes were seen by the neighbors and they
called the fire department, and the arriving fire truck had started raising
its ladder when they were halfway down the street. The rising ladder tore
out the overhead wires and put out the electricity and disconnected the
telephones in a ten-square city block area but they did get the house fire
out.
Time passed.
Both men were discharged from the hospital, the house was
repaired, the dog came home, the police acquired a new car, and all was
right with their world. A while later they were watching TV and the
weatherman announced a cold snap for that night. The husband asked his wife
if she thought they should bring in their plants for the night.
That's when she shot him.
(And you think you had a bad day) |

Locked your keys in your car????
If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone on your cell phone.
Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the other person at your home press the unlock button of your key fob (clicker), holding it near the phone on their end. Your car doors will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you.
Distance is no object you could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk!).
Editor's Note * It works fine! We tried it out, and it unlocked our car over a cell phone!)
Mike's Note *
I locked the car had my youngest daughter call me while I was far away from the car. I clicked open into the phone and I could hear the car doors unlock through her cell phone.. My daughter confirmed that sure enough the doors opened. |

Mulch Warning
Shortcut to: http://www.agctr.lsu.edu/termites/
If you use mulch around your house be very careful about buying mulch this year. After the Hurricane in New Orleans many trees were blown over. These trees were then turned into mulch and the state is trying to get rid of tons and tons of this mulch to any state or company who will come and haul it away. So it will be showing up in Home Depot and Lowes etc.,at dirt cheap prices with one huge problem; Formosan Termites will be the bonus in many of those bags. New Orleans is one of the few areas in the country were the Formosan Termites has gotten a strong hold and most of the trees blown down were already badly infested with those termites. Now we may have the worst case of transporting a problem to all parts of the country that we have ever had. These termites can eat a house in no time at all and we have no good control against them, so tell your friends that own homes to avoid cheap mulch and know were it came from. |

RECOGNIZING A STROKE
A true storySusie is recovering at an incredible pace for someone with a massive stroke all because Sherry saw Susie stumble - -that is the key that isn't mentioned below - and then she asked Susie the 3 questions. So simple - - this literally saved Susie's life - - Some angel sent it to Susie's friend and they did just what it said to do. Susie failed all three so 911 was called. Even though she had normal blood pressure readings and did not appear to be a stroke as she could converse to some extent with the Paramedics they took her to the hospital right away. Thank God for the sense to remember the 3 steps!

Subject: Credit cards
Be sure to read 'Scene 3' Unbelievable!! Scary!
SCENE 1. This is a new one. People sure stay busy trying to cheat us,
don't they??
A friend went to the local gym and placed his belongings in the locker.
After the workout and a shower, he came out, saw the locker open, and
thought to himself, "Funny, I thought I locked the locker. Hmmmmm." He
dressed and just flipped the wallet to make sure all was in order.
Everything looked okay - all cards were in place.
A few weeks later his credit card bill came - a whooping bill of $14,000!
He called the credit card company and started yelling at them, saying
that he did not make the transactions. Customer care personnel verified
that there was no mistake in the system and asked if his card had been
stolen.
"No," he said, but then took out his wallet, pulled out the credit card,
and yep - you guessed it - a switch had been made. An expired similar
credit card from the same bank was in the wallet. The thief broke into
his locker at the gym and switched cards.
Verdict: The credit card issuer said since he did not report the card
missing earlier, he would have to pay the amount owed to them. How much
did he have to pay for items he did not buy? $9,000! Why were there no
calls made to verify the amount swiped? Small amounts rarely trigger a "warning bell" with some credit card companies. It just so happens that
all the small amounts added up to big one!
SCENE 2. A man at a local restaurant paid for his meal with his credit
card. The bill for the meal came, he signed it, and the waitress folded
the receipt and passed the credit card along. Usually, he would just take
it and place it in his wallet or pocket. Funny enough, though, he
actually took a look at the card and, lo and behold, it was the expired
card of another person. He called the waitress and she looked perplexed.
She took it back, apologized, and hurried back to the counter under the
watchful eye of the man. All the
waitress did while walking to the counter was wave the wrong expired card
to the counter cashier, and the counter cashier immediately looked down
and took out the real card. No exchange of words --- nothing! She took it
and came back to the man with an apology.
Verdict: Make sure the credit cards in your wallet are yours. Check the
name on the card every time you sign for something and/or the card is
taken away for even a short period of time. Many people just take back
the credit card without even looking at it, "assuming" that it has to be
theirs. FOR YOUR OWN SAKE, DEVELOP THE HABIT OF CHECKING YOUR CREDIT CARD
EACH TIME IT IS RETURNED TO YOU AFTER A TRANSACTION!
SCENE 3: Yesterday I went into a pizza restaurant to pick up an order
that I had called in. I paid by using my Visa Check Card which, of
course, is linked directly to my checking account.
The young man behind the counter took my card, swiped it, then laid it on
the counter as he waited for the approval, which is pretty standard
procedure. While he waited, he picked up his cell phone and started
dialing. I noticed the phone because it is the same model I have, but
nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Then I heard a click that sounded
like my phone sounds when I take a picture. He then gave me back my card
but kept the phone in his hand as if he was still pressing buttons.
Meanwhile, I'm thinking: I wonder what he is taking a picture of,
oblivious to what was really going on. It then dawned on me: the only
thing there was my credit card, so now I'm paying close attention to what
he is doing. He set his phone on the counter, leaving it open. About five
seconds later, I heard the chime that tells you that the picture has been
saved. Now I'm standing there struggling with the
fact that this boy just took a picture of my credit card. Yes, he played
it off well, because had we not had the same kind of phone, I probably
would never have known what happened. Needless to say, I immediately
canceled that card as I was walking out of the pizza parlor. All I am
saying is, be aware of your surroundings at all times. Whenever you are
using your credit cards, take caution and don't be careless. Notice who
is standing near you and
what they are doing when you use your card. Be aware of phones because
many have a camera phone these days. When you are in a restaurant and the
waiter/waitress brings your card and receipt for you to sign, make sure you scratch the number off. Some restaurants are using only the last four
digits, but a lot of them are still putting the whole thing on there. I
have already been a victim of credit card fraud and, believe me, it is
not fun. The truth is that they can get you even when you are careful,
but don't make it easy for them.
FORWARD THIS TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN THINK OF. |

Watch for Needles While Pumping Gas
Read this before your next gas fill-up. This world gets sicker everyday!
Folks: Please take a couple minutes to read this warning about Gas Pumping Handles. Warning: Look at the gas pump handle BEFORE you pump your gas. Please read and forward to anyone you know who drives a car.
My name is Captain Abraham Sands of the Jacksonville, Florida, Police Department. I have been asked by state and local authorities to write this email in order to get the word out to car drivers of a very dangerous prank that is occurring in numerous states. Some person or persons have been affixing hypodermic needles to the underside of gas pump handles! These needles appear to be infected with HIV positive blood. In the Jacksonville area alone, there have been 17 cases of people being stuck by these needles over the past five (5) months. We have verified ! reports of at least 12 others in various states around the country. It is believed that these may be copycat incidents due to someone reading about the crimes or seeing them reported on television. At this point no one has been arrested and catching the perpetrator(s) has become our top priority. Shockingly, of the 17 people who where stuck, 8 have tested HIV positive and because of the nature of the disease, the others could test positive in a couple years.
Evidently the consumers go to fill their car with gas, and when picking up the pump handle get stuck with the infected needle. IT IS IMPERATIVE TO CAREFULLY CHECK THE HANDLE of the gas pump each time you use one. LOOK AT EVERY SURFACE YOUR HAND MAY TOUCH, INCLUDING UNDER THE HANDLE!
If you do find a needle affixed to one, immediately contact your local police department so they can collect the evidence.
PLEASE HELP US BY MAINTAINING A VIGILANCE, AND BY FORWARDING THIS EMAIL TO ANYONE YOU KNOW WHO DRIVES. THE MORE PEOPLE WHO KNOW OF THIS, THE BETTER PROTECTED WE CAN ALL BE! Rose Lambert, Chief Aide to Supervisor Gerry Hyland, Mount Vernon District, 2511 Parkers Lane, Alexandria, VA 22306.
PLEASE READ THIS AND PASS IT ON TO EVERYONE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK!!!! |
